He quit his job in the Great India Peninsular Railway in 1927 to join Mahatma Gandhi's Non-Cooperation Movement. He enrolled in Sabarmati Ashram, participated in various agitations along with the Mahatma and earned the latter's appreciation. Seeing his grit and determination and pursuing things till their logical end, the Mahatma had remarked, "India would have attained Independence long back, if only it had a few stalwarts like him".
That was, `Amarajeevi' Potti Sriramulu, who had sacrificed his life for the sake of statehood for Andhra. He took up the emancipation of Harijans as a crusade. He went on a fast and succeeded in getting entry to the dalits into the Venugopala Swami Templ in Nellore. He established the "Hindu Sanskarana Samithi", a voluntary organisation and worked relentlessly for the uplift of Harijans and for eradication of untouchability.
Born to Potti Guravayya and Mahalakshmamma in Madras on March 16, 1901, Sriramulu had his education in Madras. His ancestors, who belonged to Guntur district, had migrated to Madras in search of greener pastures. He did his diploma in sanitary engineering from the Victoria Jubilee Technical Institute in Bombay. He worked in the G.I.P. Railway in Madras and Bombay for four years for a salary of Rs.250 a month.
In 1928, his wife gave birth to a child and died. Within a few days, the baby also died, leaving him grief-stricken. The subsequent death of his mother made him lose interest in worldly pursuits and paved the way for his entry into and active involvement in the non-violent movements led by Gandhiji.
He participated in the Salt Satyagraha in 1930 and underwent imprisonment. He took an active part in the Quit India Movement in 1942 and was jailed along with the Mahatma. In response to the call given by Gandhiji to serve the villagers, who constitute 70 per cent of the population, he enrolled in the Gandhi Ashram set up by Yerneni Subrahmanyam near Komaravolu village in Krishna district and spread the Gandhian philosophy.
Following the assassination of the Mahatma, Sriramulu was appointed director of the Gandhi Memorial Fund for Andhra. He was disappointed at the poor response from the Telugus to the cause. He also found the response to the Bhoodan movement, Gandhi Trust and Kasturba Trust was lukewarm. He contended that the poor response was due to the absence of a separate state for Andhras and decided to strive for it.
The demand for a separate state for Andhras first came up in 1910. Several Telugus were jailed during the `Vande Maataram' agititation. At that time, some of them underlined the need for a separate state. The demand gained momentum in the convention held at Nidadavolu in Krishna district in 1912.
The demand was also raised in the subsequent conventions held at Bapatla in Guntur district, Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam. The Congress Working Committee at its meeting held under the leadership of Annie Besant passed a resolution approving the division of states on linguistic basis.
The British Government, however, rejected the demand. The Dhar Commission, which was appointed by the Central Government after Independence on August 15, 1947 rejected the idea of formation of linguistic states. It felt that the Telugu pockets in Madras State could be considered as a separate state. The Dhar report was opposed by the people. Sensing the mood of the people, the All-India Congress Committee at its meeting at Jaipur in 1948, appointed Jawaharlal Nehru, Vallabhbhai Patel and Pattabhi Seetharamayya to look into the demand. The committee suggested that barring Madras, the remaining Telugu speaking areas could be linked to form a separate Andhra state. The Telugus were not prepared to part with Madras.
On August 15, 1951, Swamy Seetharam launched a fast-unto-death for achieving the demand for a separate Andhra state. The Central Government did not take notice of the agitation. The fast continued for 35 days. Sensing danger, Acharya Vinobha Bhave apprised Nehru of the situation. The two leaders met Seetharam and made him give up the fast, promising to get statehood for Andhra. Nehru, however, did not keep his promise.
Potti Sriramulu decided to undertake a fast-unto-death. He began the fast in the house of Bulusu Sambamurthy in Madras city on October 19, 1952. Several people thought that this would be another fast that would be given up after some days. After 20 days his health deteriorated.
Tanguturi Prakasam Panthulu used to visit the hunger-strike camp daily and inquire about his health. The Gandhian, Yerneni Subrahmanyam, used to shed tears secretly seeing his plight. Though Sriramulu became physically weak, he was mentally strong and declined to give up his fast.
On the 56th day, he passed into a coma and a couple of days later, he developed breathing problems. On December 15, 1952, Sriramulu breathed his last, after 58 days of fasting. On the intimation of Yerneni Subrahmanyam, the legendary singer, Ghantasala, and freedom-fighter and singer, Moparru Dasu, rushed to the place. They composed and rendered a song in honour of the immortal leader.
The body was taken in a procession. When the procession reached Mount Road, thousands of people joined and raised slogans hailing Sriramulu. Later, they went into a frenzy and resorted to destruction of public property. The news spread like wildfire and created an uproar among the people in far off places like Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Eluru, Guntur, Tenali, Ongole and Nellore.
Seven people were killed in police firing in Anakapalle and Vijayawada. The popular agitation continued for three to four days disrupting normal life in Madras and Andhra regions. On December 19, 1952, Nehru, agreed to grant statehood to Andhras.
The State of Andhra was formed on October 1, 1953, with Kurnool as its capital. On November 1, 1956, Andhra Pradesh was formed with Hyderabad as its capital.

Foundry for the manufacture of guns, mortars and cannon balls were also established within the fort under the supervision of the General. In the early days, the fort was of strategic importance. Prisoners captured in the campaign against Tippu were confined in this fort for sometime. It is further said that a brass gun 16 ft. long bored as a 22 ponder, found in the fort could not be removed even for a few yards by a large number of people, even with the help of 16 elephants.

Group discussion: Students of Brahmaiah College of Engineering in Sri Potti Sriramulu Nellore district.

The series of attacks on girl students, harassment and ragging incidents in and around the educational institutions are disturbing students. The recent acid attack on engineering students – Praneetha and Swapnika – in Warangal district shows how cruelly some youth are behaving, in the name of love, say the students of Brahmaiah College of Engineering.
Participating in a discussion organised at the college in Sri Potti Sriramulu Nellore district, the students held the police and the government equally responsible for the acid attack. They criticised the police for their inaction.
A first year Electrical and Electronics Engineering student, I.V.N. Vidya, said the government should take stringent measures to ensure that teasing, ragging and the scenes of sadistic behaviour are not glamourised in films as most of the youth are highly influenced by them. In many movies, the relationship between students and lecturers depicts more as buffoonery than of comedy. This is leading to dilution of respect shown to the teachers. The officials should also censor the obscene scenes in films and televisions to prevent attacks on women, she opined.
Another student, N. Alekhya, said the police should react immediately when a student complains of harassment or ‘eve-teasing’. The college managements should not feel that their responsibility is limited up to college premises and the management and police should arrange vigil near bus stops and other public places.
In some cases, indifference of the parents is also responsible for spoiling the life of youth. Parents should also spend some time with their wards and prevent them from getting addicted to bad habits. The students, particularly girls, should be courageous and discuss their problems with friends. If problems faced by them are brought to the notice of the college managements they should respond immediately, said a Computer Science Engineering student L. Rajesh.
M. Venkata Varun, a first year CSE student said the courts should treat evils like ragging, teasing and attacks on girls as special cases and give expeditious judgements, which will help in curbing such incidents to some extent. The involvement of political leaders should be viewed seriously. The college managements should organise counselling for students, parents meetings to prevent attacks on girls and avoid suicides. The media should also concentrate on giving information for students on the consequences of ragging and eve-teasing cases and its impact on the accused rather than highlighting the gory incidents, said a CSE student G. Divya Sri.
Other students K. Srikanth, C. Ramana, P. Varma, G. Bhargavi, V. Sailaja, N. Mahendra Babu, S. Suhasini, G. Suresh and P. Pullaiah participated in the discussion. The students took an oath not to resort to ragging and teasing and have friendly relationship with each other. College principal N.R.M. Reddy, administrative officer Allam Mallikharjuna, lecturers G.V. Ramu, Y. Prabhakar Reddy and other faculty members participated.

Nellore Chepala Pulusu

"Nellore Chepala Pulusu" ! As soon as I hear this name I get water in my mouth. It is very very famous in Andhra Pradesh. My mother prepares fish curry as I prepared Vankaaya pulusu, instaed og brinjal she adds fish peices. Even that too taste good. When I visited my Mils's place two years ago, I tastes this curry prepared my her. From then on wards I just wanted to learn this to perfection. I could achieve that by now; though I like the one prepared by her. Iam waiting for next chance;-) Well, by now you would have gone through above pulusu podi. That is key ingredient in this recipe. So lets get into it with out no delay. I hope you will enjoy this , coming weekend. All you need to do.....

ngredients:
----------------
1.6 to 2 lbs fish ( I used King Salmon here. This taste little sweet compare to cat fish)
2 big tomotoes ot 3 medium tomatoes (choose those which can get much juice out of it)
2 medium lemon sized Tamarind
2 tsp Ginger-Garlic paste
2 tsp dry Coconut powder
2 tsp Turmeric powder
2 to 3 tsp samber poweder or Pulusu Powder
1big Onion
1/4 th tsp Hing powder (Inguvaa)
Oil for cooking (1 tbsp)
Salt as required

Method:
Clean the fish with salt especially on the skin side. Cut into desired size of pieces. Drain all the water.
Marinate fish with salt, turmeric powder and pulusu podi. Coat the mixture to the fish pieces properly. Set aside till all other prepartions are done.
Soak tamarind in warm water till it becomes soft. Extract the juice and keep aside.
Make puree out of tomatoes. (or elase you can also put tomatoes in hot water for a while. Peel the skin and squeez the juice the juice.)
Cut the onions into thin long pieces.
Grind ginger, garlic and dry coconut into paste and set aside.
Mix tomato puree and tamarind juice to geather. See the taste. If you feel more tamarind juice is necessary than soak again and take juice and mix with this. It is very important step here. As this will make difference in the taste of the gravy.
Take a wide and depth pan, so that fishes are not broken and can be turend easily.
Heat oil and fry onions till light brown. Add ginger-garlic-coconut paste and fry for few seconds. Now add hing here and fry for few seconds.
Add the tomato and tamarind puree and allow to boil. Now add the marinated fish into it. Mix well and close the lid and cook on high heat for 10 minutes.
Decrease the heat to medium. Open the lid and turn the fishes very carefully or can mix whole thing by holding the handels.
Taste for spice and salt. If you feel you need more add salt and pulusu or sambaar podi little more here . Mix slowly and allow to cook on medium heat for 5 minutes more.
Once you think the taste is set, decrease the heat to low for 2 minutes and remove from heat.

NELLORE District situated in the South Eastern portion of the state with a costal length of 163 KM bounded by Bay of Bengal on the East. The district was known as VIKRAMA SIMHAPURI until 13th Century and later it came to be referred to as Nellore. Historically the district was under the rule of mouryas, sathavahanas, pallavas, cholas, telugcholas, kakatias, pandyans etc. The great Telugu poet Tikkana Somayaji translated 15 parvas of Sanskrit Mahabharata into Telugu in Nellore.
The city derives its name from the Tamil, “nelli” which means rice, as paddy cultivation is the predominant occupation in this region. Nellore has a long history that streches back to the 6th century A.D. Once ruled by the Pallava and Chola dynastics, Golconda vassals, Nawabs of Arcot and the Vijayanagara kings, Nellore, which was in the erstwhile Madras State, became a part of Andhra Pradesh in 1956.
Nothing certain is known of the History of Nellore before the time of the Cholas. The Neolthic age in Nellore is more abscure than the Paleolithic age. It is not clear up to what extent this district was occupied by the Dravidains.
It is supposed that Nellore was situated in Dandakaranya forests into which the Aryas first penetrated as adventurous sages with the rise of the Mouryan Empire Nellore also seems to have under its influence and was part of the Ashoka Empire in the 3rd century B.C. It was next included in the Pallava Dominion between the fourth and sixth century A.D.
Satish Dhawan Space Research Centre (SHAR) near Sullurpet has the worldwide significance of Scientific importance. Nelapattu is a beautiful Bird sanctuary where Pelicans, Flamingo, Strocks and other 20 variety of birds comes from other countries and stays from October to February, March every year. The bundle of straw leaning against the door in the photo on the left below is a typical Indian broom. Men wear dhothis or pants -- about 50% of each. In southern India, especially away from Chennai, most women wear saris. Younger women and school girls are often in salwar kameez. Even in Chennai, almost all women were in either saris or salwar kameez. Salwar are loose drawstring pants, tight at the ankles, and kameez is a long-sleeved calf-length tunic slit at the sides to the waist -- or at least to the hips.
