Body of a panther was found hanging from a tree in the forest area abutting Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Shar, Sriharikota, in SPSR Nellore district on Monday.
According to wildlife divisional forest officer C. Pardhananda Prasad, the animal was caught in a trap set for wild boars by Girijans in the forest. The leopard climbed a tree with the trap around its waist and it was killed after the strings of the trap were tightened when they got struck in the branches of the tree.
A mechanic working in sewerage plant alerted the Shar officials when he noticed the panther hanging from the tree branches on Monday morning. They, in turn, informed the matter to forest officials.
Mr Prasad said that the panther would have panicked after it was caught in the trap and its bid to free from the trap led to its death. He informed that the animal is aged about seven years and measuring 75 cm height and 60 kg weight.
He struck down the role of poachers while indicating to the body parts of the animal such as nails and teeth which are intact.
He said that it is a practice for the Girijans to set trap for wild boars on Saturdays to eat their meat on Sundays and they might not have expected this.
The body of leopard was cremated after performing post-mortem on Monday evening. It had died about 24 hours ago, as per the report, he added.
