The bundle of straw leaning against the door in the photo on the left below is a typical Indian broom. Men wear dhothis or pants -- about 50% of each. In southern India, especially away from Chennai, most women wear saris. Younger women and school girls are often in salwar kameez. Even in Chennai, almost all women were in either saris or salwar kameez. Salwar are loose drawstring pants, tight at the ankles, and kameez is a long-sleeved calf-length tunic slit at the sides to the waist -- or at least to the hips. Salwar Kameez is usually worn with a long, matching scarf, worn low over the chest and draped back across both shoulders. Or worn over the head and wrapped around the neck.
